Gary R. Holt, age 73, former Geneva Police Captain, died late Tuesday evening with family by his side at his residence in Champioin. Gary was suffering from complications due to primary progressive aphasia.
He was born April 1, 1946 in Baltimore, MD, the son of the late Thomas & Almeda (Lewis) Holt and has resided in Geneva all of life before relocating to Champion a year ago. Gary was married to Judith D. Robison on April 25, 1966 in Monroe, MI. He and Judy knew each other since first grade. He was a veteran of the U. S. Army, serving during the Vietnam Era. Gary was with the Geneva Police Dept. from 1979-2005, retiring as a Captain.
He was always active with the Geneva Church of the Nazarene, serving on the board, Sunday School Superintendent and worked with the youth group. He was a member of the American Legion in Geneva, FOP Lakeshore Lodge #114 and served on the Grape Jamboree Committee. He was an avid golfer and enjoyed his Gold Wing Motorcycle.
Survivors include his wife, Judy; two sons, Michael A. (Faith) Holt of Sagamore Hills & Brian T. (Letra) Holt of Champion; six grandchildren, Tyler, Jared, Lauren, Julia, Nathan & Allison and a brother, David (Sue) Holt of Ravenna.
The family would like to extend a special thanks to all of Gary’s caretakers, sister-in-law, Donna Maltby who was always there for him and hospice volunteers and staff, Heather, Mark, Anthony & Kelly.
Funeral services will be held Saturday at 1:00 PM at the Geneva Church of the Nazarene, 710 Centinnial St., Geneva with Pastor Rich Meier of the Cherry Valley Church of the Nazarene officiating. FOP Lakeshore Lodge service will follow Pastor Meier. Services will conclude with State Army Honor Guard rendering military honors.
Visitation will be held from 10:00 AM – 1:00 PM prior to the service with Geneva Police standing honor guard. The family requests in lieu of flowers memorial contributions go to the Geneva Church of the Nazarene (above address) or Southern Hospice Care, 5401 Ashley Cir., Suite E, Austintown, OH 44115, envelopes will be at the church.
