Thomas E. Wehrung, Sr., age 70, died unexpectedly Saturday evening at his residence.
He was born August 22, 1949 in Conneaut, the son of William & Virginia (Wilson) Wehrung, Sr. and has resided in this area most of his life. Tom was in the 1968 graduating class at Jefferson High School. He was married to Darcie A. Cornell on July 13, 1978 in Jefferson. Tom is a 2005 retired carpenter from Carpenter’s Local #95 in Cleveland.
Tom was currently a Captain and Assistant Fire Chief with the Jefferson Volunteer Fire Dept. which he has served for 44 years and received the Fireman of the Year Award in 2006. He was also an EMT on the Jefferson Emergency Squad for a short time. He was a former H.O.G. member and enjoyed fishing, hunting and carpentry work. He coached little league baseball when his boys were growing up. For over 20 years, Tom loved hosting his annual clam bake at this time of the year and loved visiting and talking with anyone.
Survivors include his wife, Darcie; three children, Thomas E. (Tyla) Wehrung, Jr. of Cape Coral, FL, Sandi L. (Rob) Cramlet of Austinburg Twp. & Mike L. (Lisa) Hawkins of Columbus; four grandchildren, Toby, Theo, Tylee & Tom, III; two great-grandchildren; a brother, William (Violet) Wehrung, Jr. of Durango, CO and two sisters, Joan (Danny) Ashley of Jefferson & Kathy (Tom) Miller of Lebanon, TN. Besides his parents, he was preceded in death by the best pet he ever had, “Bud” his dog.
Funeral services will be held Saturday at 10:30 AM at the Jefferson Home of Fleming & Billman Funeral Directors and Crematory, 49 W. Jefferson St., Jefferson with Rev. John Werner of the First Congregational United Church of Christ officiating.
Calling hours will be Friday from 4-8 PM at the funeral home. Jefferson Volunteer Fire Dept. will stand Honor Guard during calling hours. The family requests in lieu of flowers, memorial contributions be directed to the Jefferson Firefighters Assoc., 98 E. Jefferson St., Jefferson, OH 44047.
